Stephen undertakes Conservation Volunteer Work with support from SkillSET With the focus on Action for Brain Injury (ABI) Week, which runs from May 19th – 23rd, we’re highlighting the lived experiences of Cedar service users who live with brain injuries. The theme this year is ‘On a Good Day’, emphasising how service users with brain injuries continue to stay positive and active. Stephen, who acquired a brain injury in 2013, joined Cedar’s SkillSET programme back in November 2024, as he wanted to identify employment opportunities. His previous work experience was in hospitality and baking. Alongside his Employment Officer Caroline McAllister, he has been able to get support to explore options of returning to this sector. Speaking about his experiences, he said SkillSET allowed him to complete “training in Updating a CV, Job Searching Techniques, and Interview Skills Training.” Stephen said that this has also given him the opportunity to pursue some of his spare time activities, including Conservation work. He said, “I volunteer with Conservations Volunteers, which I thoroughly enjoy. I also love to paint.” What is SkillSET? SkillSET is a new innovative programme of specialist employment preparation and training, for people with a disability / health condition who are economically inactive. Cedar is delivering the service across NI as part of a partnership of seven disability organisations.
