ABI Choices group make trip to Templemore Baths ahead of Acquired Brain Injury Week In celebration of Action for Brain Injury Week our ABI Choices visited Templemore Baths - not for a swim, but to enjoy the rich cultural heritage associated with the Baths. Templemore Baths has been extensively remodeled in recent years and has become a great visitor attraction, making it the perfect location for a visit from our ABI group. At least one member of our group had previously used the ‘slipper baths’, which were used to get washed after a hard day’s work. Indeed, the need for a public place to get washed and to relax was a necessity during the early and mid-20th century. Our group met for a coffee in the pleasant café before taking the grand tour. These tours are open to anyone and can be booked online. Terry, our guide, was a mine of information and for over an hour he regaled us with stories and facts about the Baths. While the old pools are no longer in use, one of them has been carefully preserved, and there are glass tiles fitted into the floor where you can peer through to the original pool. When the tour was over, the group retired to the café, where the tour and exhibits – and life in general – were discussed over tea, coffee, sandwiches and scones. The group in general agreed this was an example of the type of activities that can be accomplished ‘on a good day’. The outing highlighted the significance of accessible, welcoming public spaces in supporting recovery and mental wellbeing. For many attendees, the tour also sparked personal memories and stories, reinforcing the powerful role that heritage plays in healing and identity. Stephen, ABI Choices Case Officer said: "This was a great visit on the theme of 'On a good day,' the social interaction, inclusive and welcoming space and the the obvious enjoyment shown by our service users, made this a memorable occasion." This visit to Templemore Baths was not just a celebration of Action for Brain Injury Week — it was a testament to resilience, community spirit, and the value of preserving spaces that tell our shared story.
